Canadian Gold Tokens
For the most part, Candian gold tokens were produced by jewelers in the early 1900's. Few were set aside for numismatic purposes resulting in many rare varieties. All those dated prior to 1900 were backdated. It is extremely common to find them with jewelry damage. The last count I heard was that there are 135 varieties of these tokens. A few articles have been written on this subject appearing in "The Brasher Bulletin" which is the quarterly publication for the Society of Private and Pioneer Numismatics(SPPN). The first articles appeared in the early 1990's authored by Ronald Greene. Much of this earlier information can be seen on the web on Mike Locke's website. More recently, new articles have been written co-authored by Ronald Greene and Mike Locke which contains updated information and variety listings. (See Brasher Bulletin Vol. 15, No. 1, & Vol. 15, No. 4, & Vol. 16, No. 1). Refence numbers for most varieties are prefaced by an "RG", which is short for Ronald Greene. Additionally there are a few varieties noted by Mike Locke that haven't been assigned a RG number. The following isn't an attempt to list all the known varieties; rather, it is just pictorial view of those in my collection. Back to the main page.
